The Case Against Satan (Penguin Classics)By Ray Russell

Before The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, there was The Case Against Satan

By the twentieth century, the exorcism had all but vanished, wiped out by modern science and psychology. But Ray Russell—praised by Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro as a sophisticated practitioner of Gothic fiction—resurrected the ritual with his classic 1962 horror novel, The Case Against Satan, giving new rise to the exorcism on page, screen, and even in real life.

Teenager Susan Garth was “a clean-talking sweet little girl” of high school age before she started having “fits”—a sudden aversion to churches and a newfound fondness for vulgarity. Then one night, she strips in front of the parish priest and sinks her nails into his throat. If not madness, then the answer must be demonic possession. To vanquish the Devil, Bishop Crimmings recruits Father Gregory Sargent, a younger priest with a taste for modern ideas and brandy. As the two men fight not just the darkness tormenting Susan but also one another, a soul-chilling revelation lurks in the shadows—one that knows that the darkest evil goes by many names.

Review
"A sleek, compelling tale of diabolical possession that prefigures Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby."
—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

"With gripping clarity and incisive wit, Russell weaves a suspenseful plot that's more of an intellectual thriller than a horror yarn. And at a time when there are still massive ideological battles being waged between science and religion — not to mention a Pope in the Vatican who's interpreting Catholic doctrine in a way that's inspiring to some and feather-ruffling to others — The Case Against Satan retains its harrowing, relevant edge."
—NPR

"There's nothing lurid or sensationalist here . . . just some good scares and a hell of a tale told with economy and wit."
—The Chicago Times

“Provocative, shocking, moving.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"[A] sincere and subtle tale of ultimate evil that feels less dated than many of the works it inspired."
—The Seattle Times

"What cannot be doubted is importance of Ray Russell’s novel. It was a predecessor of many famous fictions involving exorcisms, a subject all but forgotten at the time. This book began a sub-genre of literature and is arguably its finest example. It is a well-written and accessible work that is delightfully full of careful nuance, yet free from weighty judgments and pesky dogmatic diatribes. But, most of all, it is a fantastic horror story. Instead of watching The Exorcist for the umpteenth time this Halloween season, read this short but thought-provoking and dramatic novel instead."

—Portland Book Review

“Russell links postpulp literature and the Grand Grand Guignol tradition with the modern sensibilities of America in the 1960s...[He is] a fascinating combination of the liberal and the heretic.”
—Guillermo del Toro

The Impossible State: Islam, Politics, and Modernity's Moral Predicament

Review

This is a bracing, erudite, and compelling account of the moral, political, and structural features of Islamic governance and the modern state, as well as of the multiple incongruities that hamper any attempt to establish one in terms of the other. Wael Hallaq delivers a welcome rejoinder to much of the dogmatic bluster swirling around the subject of shari'a and the Islamic state. At the same time, he brings into sharp focus the often overlooked resources for reconceptualizing 'the modern project' from within both Islamic and Euro-American traditions of moral and political thought. The historical, theoretical, and political richness of this account makes The Impossible State a new standard against which any claims about the possibility of establishing Islamic governance in the contemporary world must now be evaluated. (Roxanne L. Euben, Wellesley College)A provocative and wide-ranging rumination by one of the leading scholars of Islamic law, this book poses tough questions to champions and critics of shari'a alike. Wael Hallaq makes a powerful argument for the relevance of shari'a as a moral discourse while remaining critical of its compatibility with the modern state. The Impossible State is bound to elicit debate among scholars of Islam, moral philosophy, and modernity across the Western and non-Western divide. (Saba Mahmood, author of Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject)It is an important contribution to understanding the role and potential of the shari'a in the modern world. (Mark D. Welton Middle East Journal)A philosophical and rhetorical tour de force. (Choice)A refreshing take on the modern state and Islamic governance. (Middle East Media and Book Reviews)This book brings a detailed and impassioned exploration of key debates in Islamic law and governance into sustained conversation with canonical texts in Western political and legal theory.... The Impossible State makes an important theoretical contribution. (Iza Hussin Perspectives on Politics)An important, bold, and courageous intervention that stands out not just in contemporary debates on the Shari'ah in the West and the Muslim world, but in all modern writing about the subject. (American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences)Wael Hallaq skillfully navigates through the dominant philosophical and sociological arguments.... The book is a must read for anyone even remotely dealing with conceptualisations of modernity, the state and Islamic governance. (Political Studies Review)An important book by a well recognized scholar on an extremely important and difficult topic. (Religious Studies Review)In the light of the ongoing events in the Arab world today... it is difficult to imagine a more relevant and timely contribution. (Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations)

In the time of ISIS, the reformation of the Saudi state, and the perpetual ‘war on terror, questions of Islamic governance are ever present yet clouded in the spectre of violent extremism. Though, as is often argued, this form of violent extremism has always had its partners in Western Thought. Though not mentioned here, anarchist thinking most screams out to me.Nonetheless, this book represents a thorough and well-referenced analysis of the modern state, its ills, and why the Sharia represents an opposite. Some points are tedious, as I was never truly convinced by a radical difference between the Sultanate and the modern executive, they occupy a rather minor role in the overall argument. The thrust of the work is that the moral is something which has been abandoned in the positivist enterprise of the modern state. The State, as a locus of economic and political relations, is but an entity of order and domination, which asserts positivist truths as a means to achieving such ends. Hallaq’s analysis of Sharia, for me, points to what is distinctly lacking in modernity and looks to alternate ways of being to see how we can reclaim it.Overall, it is an incredible piece of academia and moral philosophy. I recommend it for anyone who has ever felt the modern world to be insufficient, yet are not seeking deeper metaphysical truths in anything but a simple desire for morality and community.

The book is a brief comparison of the role of Sharia in a state versus the state's rationale for existence.

A challenging book. Well worth the read, and an excellent critique of modernity from an Islamic perspective.

Still Reading it but so far it is a very well written and informative book about both the Modern state and the Islamic state.

Thus is a great book and explains the difference between Shariah and the modern and why they are incompatible. They are incompatible because the modern state lacks moral foundations needed for Islamic governance. There are a few issues in the final chapter which I have criticised. For a comprehensive review, visit my blog (islamnext dot com) and where you can find my review in the politics section.

This is a book that takes courage to understand because it challenges all that we take for granted. For those who have a sense of discomfort this books will articulate your predicament. For those who feel the modern world is their oister

A very interesting analysis on the western concept of State and the flaws on its applicability to the political realities of the Middle East
