Angry tears welled in Elizabeth's eyes as she recalled last week, when everything had started. It had all happened so innocently. A harmless flirtation with Devon in chem lab that had grown into a full-blown love affair. She had never meant to hurt Todd, but she hadn't been able to control her heart.

When her twin sister, Jessica, had found out about Elizabeth and Devon, she'd freaked. Jessica had wanted Devon for herself and had seen an opportunity to get revenge on Elizabeth by setting up Courtney Kane with Todd. Courtney--tall and curvaceous, with shiny mahogany hair and eyes the color of smoke was one of the biggest snobs Elizabeth had ever met. A student at posh Lovett Academy, Courtney had tried to steal Todd from Elizabeth before and had been only too happy to try to steal him again.

At first Elizabeth had felt a twinge of jealousy when she learned about Todd and Courtney. But then she had reasoned that if she was seeing Devon, Todd should be able to see someone too. When she had asked Todd to meet her at the Dairi Burger this afternoon, it had been to tell him how happy she was that he'd found someone. She had wanted to tell Todd it was OK for him to give Courtney the beautiful silver ring he'd bought for the anniversary of Elizabeth's first published story.

Elizabeth grimaced as she recalled the hopeful, pained look in Todd's eyes when he'd given her the ring. It had been a lovely gesture. Ever since Elizabeth was a little girl, it had been her dream to be a writer. Getting her first article published in Sweet Valley High's student newspaper, the Oracle, had been a major event for her. But because she had started seeing Devon, she hadn't thought it was right to accept Todd's anniversary gift. Still, she cared about Todd. She had wanted to tell him that at the Dairi Burger--to ask him if they could still be friends.

"But Jessica had other plans," Elizabeth mumbled to herself as she paced. She and Todd had talked for a long while, a conversation full of feelings and memories that had reminded her of why she loved Todd in the first place. She'd begun to wonder if maybe Todd hadn't been right for her all along. As they had become more comfortable they had started to talk about the past week. Eventually she and Todd had put two and two together and realized Jessica had been behind the whole Courtney scheme.

It was at that moment that Jessica, Devon, and Courtney had stormed into the Dairi Burger. When Devon had seen Elizabeth with Todd, he'd lost it, and so had Todd. Devon, in a rage, had told Todd to leave Elizabeth alone. Todd, believing he was losing his one chance to get Elizabeth back, had dropped to his knees and proposed to her, offering her the silver ring to seal their engagement.

After that the situation had truly spiraled out of control. A shoving match had begun, and before Elizabeth had known what was happening, Devon and Todd had started fighting like a couple of Neanderthals. Elizabeth had begged someone to stop them--had even gotten bruised herself trying to break up the fight. It was humiliating and horrible. How could both of them be such immature animals? she had asked herself as she ran from the Dairi Burger. Todd, who was always so warm and considerate, Devon with his sensitive nature and brilliant mind.

Elizabeth flung out her hand angrily, knocking a slew of Todd's cards to the floor. It's all Jessica's fault, she told herself. If she hadn't brought Devon and Courtney to the Dairi Burger, this would never have happened. Jessica had done some pretty sleazy scheming in the past, but nothing this hateful.

Tears welled in Elizabeth's eyes, blurring the gifts and cards. She could never forgive Jessica for this--never! The tears came harder, and she flung herself onto the couch. Upstairs she could hear the shower running in the bathroom she and Jessica shared. The thought of Jessica going nonchalantly about her daily life after what she had done just made Elizabeth cry harder.

Burying her head in a throw pillow, Elizabeth wept her heart out. Suddenly through her sobs she heard the phone begin to ring. Her parents were out. She and Jessica were alone in the house, and Jessica would never hear the phone over the shower.

Elizabeth considered just letting the voice mail system take the call. But what if it's important and the caller hangs up before the voice mail answers? she thought. Swiping at her tears, she ran to the hallway and grabbed the receiver. "Hello?" she said in a shaky voice.

"Liz, finally!" It was Devon. "I've been trying to reach you all afternoon," he said. "I needed to tell you--"

Elizabeth cut him off. "There's nothing you can tell me I don't already know," she cried angrily. Then she slammed the receiver down, her tears breaking loose in a cascade of confusion and pain.

Sobbing, she ran upstairs toward her room. Jessica was just coming out of the bathroom. Her wavy blond hair was wrapped in a thick pink towel. She was wearing a fluffy white bathrobe and matching slippers, smiling contentedly as if everything was absolutely fine. Elizabeth shot her a furious look. "I hope you're happy" she yelled. Then she ran into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her before she threw herself across the bed.

Katharine Doob Sakenfeld is the William Albright Eisenberger Professor of Old Testament Literature and Exegesis at Princeton Theological Seminary. Professor Sakenfeld's area of expertise includes the narratives concerning the pre-monarchic period, Methods (including Feminist Interpretation), and Sociology of the Old Testament. She is a member of many academic and professional associations, including the Society of Biblical Literature (where she serves on a number of committees) and Catholic Biblical Association. Her editorial board service includes the Journal of Biblical Literature, Theology Today, Bible Review, Word and World, and many other ecumenical and denominational boards. About the Author

Alan Lightman is the author of six novels, including the international bestseller Einstein’s Dreams and The Diagnosis, which was a National Book Award finalist. He is also the author of two collections of essays and several books on science. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, Granta, Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and Nature, among other publications. A theoretical physicist as well as a writer, he has served on the faculties of Harvard and MIT, where he was the first person to receive a dual faculty appointment in science and the humanities. He lives in the Boston area.

This 145 page book is about a complex subject -- the universe and our place in it. It is lucid, rational, and persuasively written; a small book on a vast subject which is best enjoyed by the reader personally. In brief, Alan Lightman tells us that the current scientific view which he, as a scientist, is inclined to agree, is that our universe is the result of a random coincidence of forces and events (his first chapter explains this). He also says that current scientific opinion inclines towards the existence of not just our universe but many others. Some may similarly have randomly created conditions that lead to life. However, he accepts that these are based on scientific theories and calculations that are rational, and irrefutable for the time being, there is no way we can prove that there is life anywhere else.Lightman is a self-confessed atheist although reading his thoughts in this book, one might be forgiven for thinking him to be a Buddhist. He certainly does not believe in the existence of any gods, and he does not believe in any life after death. He believes that we, like every living thing, grows in the time available to us in the space we are in, and gradually, we wither and are gone - like everything else that once lived but are now dead - the one billion people who were alive in the year 1800, for example.Lightman agrees with the views of Richard Dawkins so far as biology, evolution and atheism are concerned. But he dislikes Dawkins' attitude. Lightman is amenable to people who wish to believe in a personal god or gods. He believes that the scientific people (not science) can live with religious people (not religion). He clearly does not think that science and religion are compatible, but scientists and religious people can be.It seems, therefore, such a brilliant piece of work will probably attract criticism from Dawkins and extremist religious people.

"Faith, in its broadest sense, is about far more than belief in the existence of God or the disregard of scientific evidence. Faith is the willingness to give ourselves over, at times, to things we do not fully understand. Faith is the belief in things larger than ourselves. Faith is the ability to honor stillness at some moments and at others to ride the passion and exuberance that is the artistic impulse, the flight of the imagination, the full engagement with this strange and shimmering world."It is with passages like this that Alan Lightman won me over. Not only in his direct, clear prose, but with his deep respect for both faith and science. I suppose it's more than respect--his argument is that reason and awe coexist in us....that we contain (and even court) the dual impulses of chaos and order, "the predictable and the unpredictable, the rational and the irrational, regularity and irregularity."And never did his explanation of science, math or the workings of the universe confound. Rather, he framed string theory, dark matter, atomic science in human terms. The accidental universe need not be scary or intimidating. Rather, Lightman suggests, "Could there be a preciousness and value to existence stemming from the very fact of its temporary duration?"lovely....just lovely

Mostly a set of essays on scientific concepts about the universe. Mr Lightman truly has a gift for communication and the ability to convey a tremendous amount of information in most every well articulated sentence. He also has a thorough understanding (scientifically speaking) of the subject matter and presents it in a way that is easily understood.However, his attempts to present theological viewpoints/counter viewpoints fall utterly flat, as you might expect from a self confessed atheist, and would have better off been entirely omitted from the book. After having read another book he wrote, “Einstein’s Dreams,” where he explores a plethora of possible ways in which the movements of time could be experienced, I was amazed to see how strictly linearly (time wise) he speaks about God in this book. In my humble opinion, this book is VERY limited in scope (theologically speaking) and demonstrates a complete lack of comprehension of an all knowing, all powerful and ever present (in all locations and in ALL time periods at the same time) being.Also, it’s mainly in the first few essays that he speaks of things worthy of deep consideration, after that it seems like filler used to complete a book sized publication instead of a magazine article. I read the book twice just to make sure I didn’t miss anything and because, after the first read, I knew that I intended to write this review.

I don't love to give five star ratings, but this is a book that makes you take a hard look at reality, both seem and unseen by the naked eye. It even brings us to the present day and how technology is altering our experiences. I find that to be profound given that none of it requires a higher power to work, dealing solely with the world around us. It doesn't r by the spiritual experience but makes it more of a metaphysical thing rather that something other. Great read.

The Multiverse essay is good but he doesn't explain crucial points eg how different universes are related mathematically. And why 10^500 of them - which to a biologist doesn't seem many. And can one have many "copies" of a given Universe? Presumably some Universes last longer than others - does this mean that they are more numerous?

This a book I will reread many times.It helps bridge the world of science with religion. With revelations of our universe and possible multiuniverses our place in all of this causes one to rethink how we've experience this earth we call home. It highlights the transcendental moments in our lives that no science can explain.The atheists are very convincing and cause us to look at how traditional religious beliefs impede our understanding of that consciousness that is beyond measure- the power that how the energy in our lives can shape our reality.That one can accept the sacred and what science teaches us.

I used this book for my undergraduate OS course. I also switched back and forth between this book and Tanenbaum's Modern Operating Systems (3rd ed). That helped me get a sense of what this book did well, and where it might have fallen a bit short.PROS:- This book is relatively deep, technically. I found it had more specifics on implementation than Tanenbaum's book.- It has a lot of asides that are good at giving broader context for the material. For example, in explaining a scheduling algorithm, it might spend a couple paragraphs examining possible use of the scheduling algorithm outside of operating systems.CONS:- Not always clear. Sometimes I felt caught up in the minutiae and missed the forest for the trees. Even after re-reading some passages multiple times, I wasn't quite sure I was "getting it." This is where I would swap textbooks and read Tanenbaum's coverage of the same topic.- Missing some material covered in Tanenbaum. Modern Operating Systems has several chapters dedicated to topics which aren't as thoroughly covered in Anderson's textbook. Some of the topics lacking include: multimedia OSs, OS design, and security.All in all, I think this is an alright textbook, but not a great one. It might be better as a reference or as a supplement. I'm glad I had it, but if I could only have one OS book, I'd stick with Tanenbaum's.

This is more of a "breadth" than a "depth" book. It covers many of the basic concepts you'd need to know, say, for studying for an OS exam.Unlike many other books in this category, this book uses mostly contemporary examples. This is hugely important for students who simply can't relate to the 80's.If I had two wishes for this book, it would be:i) A chapter (or a section) on cache coherenceii) Better print please. Many of the pages have a tilted print and it's somewhat distracting.

I got my hands on the pre-published version and the content has gotten much better to say the least.But, onto the actual published book. Like any good OS book, it covers everything from what is a kernel to file systems. However, I found that when studying for exams, the book provided a good summary of a concept or topic and a few nice examples, but didn't quite go in-depth enough for my want-of understanding, an example being how one would go about calculating how many pages would be needed to store a 2kB file given information about the system setup, a typical exam question. However, the book was clear in explanations and had diagrams and pictures to complement the writing to aid understanding. It may be a good book to refresh your knowledge on OS concepts. Expect some depth, but don't expect too much depth.

This is a good book series that gives a different but quite helpful source of information. I purchased these books to supplement the Modern Operating System book I had to buy at my college. This series gives a different, but helpful another view on the subject.

Great book, covers lots of important topics (general OS principles, virtual memory, scheduling, shared resource allocation/lock implementation/deadlock, file systems, threads/processes, unix abstractions, I/O). When the lectures were unclear, I could always fall back on this book, find exactly what I was confused about, and figure out what I needed to know. That's the sign of great writing, and a great textbook. Also, helped me ace a job interview.
