About the Author

David Zarefsky is Owen L. Coon Professor Emeritus of Argumentation and Debate, and Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies, at Northwestern University, where he served as Dean of the School of Speech from 1988 through June 2000. He joined the Northwestern faculty in 1968 and rose through the ranks, achieving promotion to Professor in 1982. He also has held a series of administrative appointments, including Director of Forensics (1970-75), Chair of the Department of Communication Studies (1975-83), Associate Dean of the School of Speech (1983-88), and Dean.  He retired from the full-time faculty and achieved Emeritus status in 2009.

 

Zarefsky’s research and teaching are in the areas of rhetorical history and criticism, argumentation and debate, and forensics. He is the author, co-author, or editor of nine books and the author of over 100 articles in professional journals. Two of his books have won the Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address, an award of the National Communication Association (NCA): President Johnson’s War on Poverty: Rhetoric and History (University of Alabama Press, 1986) and Lincoln, Douglas, and Slavery: In the Crucible of Public Debate (University of Chicago Press, 1990). He is one of only four individuals to have won this award twice. In 1994 he was named to the ranks of NCA Distinguished Scholars and in 2015 he was named the Douglas Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar.  He also has twice won the “Best Article Award” from the Southern States Communication Association.

 

At Northwestern, Zarefsky taught courses in the study of American public discourse, with a special focus on the pre-Civil War years and on the 1960s. He also taught courses in argumentation theory, persuasion, and public speaking.  On thirteen different occasions he was named to the student government’s honor roll for distinguished teaching. He received the NCA Lifetime Teaching Excellence Award in 2012. He has held visiting appointments at Penn State University, Harvard University, and the University of Iowa. Zarefsky also has two videocourses, “Abraham Lincoln: In His Own Words” and “Argumentation: The Study of Effective Reasoning,” marketed by The Teaching Company.

 

In 1993 Zarefsky was President of the National Communication Association and in 2001 he received its Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award. He held the presidency of the Central States Communication Association in 1986-87. In 2010 and 2011 he was President of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA), a position he also occupied in 2006 and 2007.  He received the George Yoos Distinguished Service Award from RSA in 2010. He has held numerous other positions in these organizations and in the American Forensic Association, whose journal he edited from 1977-80. From 1984-89 he was the Director of the National Debate Tournament, and from 2007-15 he was the Steering Committee chair of the NCA/AFA Biennial Summer Conference on Argumentation. He also has served on the editorial boards of 10 different journals.

 

Zarefsky has been involved in numerous other activities under the heading of University and professional service. In 1982-83 he chaired Northwestern’s General Faculty Committee, the principal arm of faculty governance, and he has served on several other committees and task forces at Northwestern. He has participated on academic program review committees for over 25 colleges and universities and as a peer reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities.  From 1997 to 2001 he was on the National Advisory Council and the Steering Committee for the Center for Presidential Studies in the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Angela Valenzuela received the Outstanding Book Award for her book entitled: Subtractive Schooling: U.S.-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring at the American Educational Research Association's Annual Meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana, April 24-28th. The Award was established for the best book-length publication in educational research and development. To be considered for the Award, a book must be concerned with the improvement of the educational process through research or scholarly inquiry and must have a research base. The author or another scholar may nominate a book as specified in the Educational Researcher journal received by all AERA members. Committee Chair, P. David Pearson of Michigan State University will present Dr. Valenzuela with the Award. Among past recipients of the Award are: Stephen Jay Gould and Carol Gilligan; James C. Coleman and Thomas Hoffer; Burton R. Clark and David F. Labaree; David Tyack, Elizabeth Hansot, Teun A. Van Dijk, and Idit Harel; Joan DelFattore and Jonathan Kozol; and David C. I read this book for my Masters in Teaching program and really enjoyed it! It was one of the few books I looked forward to reading every week. I majored in Anthropology in college, so this book felt very familiar in the way it treated the problems the school was having. It's an interesting look at how the schooling "system" can harm students unintentionally and how knowing who your students are and making efforts to get to know them is important beyond just the classroom, but for school administrators and just everyone else in the school. This particular school has a problem because the people who have the power (teachers, administrators, counselors, etc) are so overwhelmed that they do not show the students that they care about them. There are a few exceptions, but the idea of subtractive schooling essentially means that students are worse off going to this school, than if they drop out, so over half of the student population (at the time in 1994) was doing just that. The first chapter is difficult to get through because it uses so much academic language and every sentence counts; I think it's like 30 pages, but it took me 3 hours! But keep reading! The reading gets easier because it changes to a conversational type tone when it switches into ethnographic writing.

Subtractive Schooling was written by Angela Valenzuela after she completed an ethnographic study of schooling conditions in an inner-city Houston high school. The high school was majority Mexican and Mexican-American students. She investigated the differences between immigrant student achievement and that of U.S.-born Mexican students to understand why immigrant students consistently out perform their peers. Her study revealed cultural differences between the Anglo and Mexican understandings of what education should be, indicating that white teachers what students to care about school while Mexican students wanted to feel like their teachers authentically cared about them as people. The schooling practices tended to degrade the Mexican culture and Spanish language which has ultimately led to the subraction of culture resources of Mexican students, particularly those students who are later generation U.S.-born and have felt the impact of the dominant culture on their lives longer than recently immigrated students. This book is a worthwhile read as it gives great insight into how schooling practices themselves contribute to the underachievement of certain student groups and shows the impact that true multicultural education can have on the learning environment.

I needed to have this book in a hurry. It arrived quickly. I purchased this one because the price was the the lowest, the condition was better than I expected for that price.

Loved the book

I like the concept of this book, but unfortunately Valenzuela repeats a lot of her information. The first chapter or so is very research heavy, which is sort of annoying. I liked understanding the story behind this book and I wish there was more of that. I had to read this book for my Master's in Teaching program. I don't recommend reading the whole book, but some chapters were eye opening. (Note: if you don't like authors jumping back and forth between another language (Spanish) and English, I don't recommend this book to them since Valenzuela does a lot of that, unless you are forced to read this book by a professor).

This book is informative and well written. It is conversational and informative, however, the information is almost 20 years old.

Excellent book. Anyone interesting in the educational system should read this.

Amelia Jones is Grierson Chair in Visual Culture in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University, Montréal. She has organised exhibitions including Sexual Politics: Judy Chicago's Dinner Party in Feminist Art History at the UCLA/Armand Hammer Art Museum (1996) and has edited other volumes, most notably Companion to Contemporary Art Since 1945 (2006).
